A package is not decoration
By Gail Macleod ·
Istanbul 2017 and Shanghai 2018: global packaging trends showed packaging is how a brand is read. Online, machines read it too.
The signal
On 7 April 2017 the Global Local Branding Alliance held its Global Packaging Trends conference in Istanbul. The host, Orhan Irmak Tasarım, reported that Turkish brand and marketing directors from food, textile, personal care and cosmetics attended, and that the alliance's members shared local design trends from their regions on the principle that packaging has to reflect local values within a global strategy. It lists me, as GLBA Johannesburg, among the speakers. Hürriyet covered the event in Turkish.
In September 2018 the alliance's Brand and Packaging Trends Forum met in Shanghai. Bizcommunity reported it as the tenth conference held around the globe, from a release by Stratcom Branding. I presented on Black Technology.
The so-what
Packaging looks like finishing. It isn't. So What Law: the pack is where the promise meets the buyer, and the first place it breaks. The Shanghai report framed the shift: as shoppers move online, packaging has to work on a screen and in the box that arrives, and it must match what shoppers expect from that brand in-store.
Now add machines. An AI assistant that describes a product is reading the pack text, the listing and the website together. Fluency is not authority, so any inconsistency between them gets blended into one confident sentence.
The distinction
Decoration is the layer you can change without anyone noticing. A package is a claim: what it is, who made it, what it is for. In Shanghai I said South Africa should take lessons from its global partners, especially China, and "be ready for the revolution that is on its way". The Istanbul principle points the same way: packaging has to reflect local values within a global strategy.
Treat every surface the same way. The pack, the product page, the profile and the press line should say the same verified thing. Where they differ, a human shopper notices. A machine just picks one.
The move
Choose one product or service and put every public description side by side: pack or proposition, website, marketplace listing, social profile, press. Mark each difference and decide which version is true. Fix the sources first, then the copy. Then ask an AI assistant to describe the product and see which version it repeats. Say it out loud: "A package is not decoration."
