A mention is not a citation

By · · Updated

AI now answers for your brand before anyone reaches your site. Being named in the answer is not the same as being the source it trusts.

Short answer: a mention is when an AI answer names your brand, and a citation is when it uses your own page as the evidence, and the two often don't match.

The signal

This week Semrush took its 2026 AI Visibility Index to Spotlight London, and the uncomfortable line is this: the brands AI talks about and the websites AI relies on are often not the same. Across 22 categories and four AI platforms in the UK, the overlap between the top 100 brands mentioned and the top 100 domains cited ran at just 36.7% to 45.3%, depending on the month. Only 16.7% to 26% of top domains made the top 100 on all four platforms at once. (The Drum — AI search is standing between brands and their customers)

Closer to the front door, Ahrefs found AI Overviews on 82.91% of US desktop results for branded searches as of 29 September. Most external citations in those answers pointed to Wikipedia, YouTube and LinkedIn, not the brand's own pages. (Ahrefs — AI Overviews on branded searches)

The so-what

Someone types your name. Before they see your homepage, a machine has already summarised you, and it may have built that summary from somebody else's page. Being mentioned feels like authority, but a mention only means you were talked about. A citation means your own words were the evidence. When the two drift apart, the story of your brand is being told from a source you didn't write, didn't check and can't update on Monday morning.

The distinction

A mention is reputation. A citation is authority. Reputation is what the room says about you; authority is what the room quotes. Fluency is not authority here either: a model can describe you smoothly from an out-of-date profile, an old video or a stranger's write-up. The fix is not more content. It is one verified set of facts, published where machines actually look, and repeated consistently on every surface you control, so the fluent answer and the true answer become the same answer.

The move

This weekend, ask four AI assistants the same three questions a buyer would ask about you: who you are, what you do, and what you charge. For each answer, write down (1) whether you were named, (2) which page it cited, (3) whether that page is yours, and (4) one fact it got wrong. Then pick the single source that shows up most and isn't yours, and correct the underlying fact there or on your own site first. Say it out loud: "A mention is not a citation."

If AI is already introducing you from someone else's page, AI Visibility Clean-up puts one verified bio and set of facts behind every answer, with a before-and-after report. It is quoted to your profile, so it starts with a free 30-minute call.

FAQ

What is the difference between a brand mention and a citation in AI search?
A mention is when an AI answer names your brand. A citation is when the answer uses your own page as its evidence. A mention is reputation; a citation is authority.
Do AI answers cite brands' own websites?
Often not. Ahrefs found AI Overviews on 82.91% of US desktop results for branded searches as of 29 September, and most external citations pointed to Wikipedia, YouTube and LinkedIn rather than the brand's own pages. In Semrush's 2026 AI Visibility Index for the UK, the overlap between the top 100 brands mentioned and the top 100 domains cited was 36.7% to 45.3%, depending on the month.
How can I check whether AI cites my own pages?
Ask four AI assistants who you are, what you do and what you charge. For each answer, note whether you were named, which page it cited, whether that page is yours, and one fact it got wrong. Then correct the most-cited source that isn't yours, or fix the fact on your own site first.

AI Visibility Clean-up

On quote, depends on the profile. Quick Fix — 2 hours; Full Clean-up — 8 hours; Ongoing Visibility — monthly retainer

Digital footprint clean-up for AI and search recommendations. For founders, executives and consultants whose story is scattered or out of date online. We audit how AI assistants and search engines see you, then fix it: one verified bio and headline across your website, LinkedIn and social profiles; evidence attached (press, papers, credentials); structured data, llms.txt and sitemaps so AI tools and Google connect your profiles to you; and a before-and-after report. This improves the odds. It does not guarantee rankings or AI recommendations.
